NK Maribor reclaimed the Slovenian PrvaLiga title in 2016-17 under manager Darko Milanič, finishing top of the table with 74 points, just one point ahead of rivals Olimpija Ljubljana in a tightly contested title race. The triumph restored Maribor's position as the dominant force in Slovenian football.

Striker Luka Zahović was a key figure in the title-winning campaign, finishing as the club's top scorer that season. The championship also set up Maribor's return to European qualification, having entered that season's continental competition through their domestic cup success.
